Gus Lopez começou a coleccionar memorabilia de Star Wars desde 1977.É actualmente um dos maiores coleccionadores de Star Wars ,tendo criado inclusivé o primeiro website de coleccionáveis de SW em 1994.Escreve também para várias revistas e livros da especialidade.Esta entrevista vem no seguimento de alguma troca de correspondência e de troca de brindes de promoções alimentares de SW que temos mantido.
Paulo:Como e porque é que começaste a coleccionar memorabilia de SW?
Gus: Comecei em 1977 logo depois de ter saído o primeiro filme.Adorei tanto o filme que comecei logo a comprar tudo o que pudesse encontrar:comics,trading cards,pins,etc.Não havia muita coisa disponível naquele ano.Coleccionava como criança mas não tinha adquirido ainda seriamente o gosto por coleccionar até aos primeiros anos da década de noventa quando os novos comics e livros de SW começaram a se lançados.
Nessa altura,comecei a coleccionar action figures e os meus interesses estenderam-se a partir dessa altura.
Paulo: Como consegues arranjar espaço na tua casa para guardar tanta coisa da tua enorme colecção?
Gus: Muitas das divisões da minha casa são baseadas nos coleccionáveis SW.Ter um lugar para os expor,permite-me focar melhor ,já que é o único espaço que irei ter alguma vez.Se alguma coisa não se ajusta com os temas da minha colecção,então provavelmente não preciso dela.
Paulo: Que tipo de artigos de SW preferes coleccionar?
Gus: Tenho interesses em algumas áreas:protótipos de brinquedos,acessórios dos filmes,peças do elenco e da produção,caixas de cereais e de outras promoções alimentares e prémios de registo;o tema geral é encontrar peças que são extremamente raras e difíceis de encontrar.
Paulo: Sei que tens viajado com a tua esposa Pam,para diversos locais onde foram filmadas algumas cenas de SW.Podes falar-nos um pouco sobre essas viagens?
Gus: Visitei a maior parte dos locais de filmagens de SW,inclusive Londres,Sevilha,o Lago Como em Itália,Death Valey,Yuma ,Crescent City nos E.U.A,Finse na Noruega e por todas as partes da Tunísia;é realmente assombroso visitar actualmente um local onde foram rodadas cenas de SW,porque te sentes como se estivésses num desses filmes.Um dos meus locais favoritos é a Tunísia,que tem tantos locais diferentes onde foram filmadas cenas de SW.Já fui à Tunísia quatro vezes e nunca fico cansado de lá ir.
Paulo: Qual é a peça mais valiosa da tua colecção?
Gus: Tenho muitos items únicos,mas acho que o modelo da" Estrela da Morte" é um dos mais valiosos da minha colecção,pois é o único modelo 3D que foi feito para o primeiro filme,estando actualmente emprestado a um museu em Seattle.
Paulo: Tens actualmente algum projecto em curso acerca de coleccionáveis SW?
Gus: Estou a trabalhar num par de projectos que ainda não foram anunciados.E continuo a escrever artigos para o Star Wars Insider.
Paulo: Que sugestão queres deixar aos coleccionadores e fãs de SW?
Gus:_ Espero que muitos dos coleccionadores portugueses decidam visitar a Jedicon na Alemanha,na próxima Primavera.A Jedicon está a tornar-se num grande evento internacional de SW,com fãs e coleccionadores de toda a Europa.Esta será a minha 4ªvisita à Jedicon.Senão,espero um dia visitar uma convenção de SW em Portugal!

Entrevista em inglês: Gus Lopez began to collect memorabilia of SW from 1977. He is at present one of the biggest collectors of SW, having created inclusive,the first collecting website about SW in 1994. He writes also for several magazines and books of the type. This interview comes in the continuation of some exchange of correspondence and trades of toasts of food promotions about SW that we have been maintaining.
Paulo:How and why did you began to collect Starwars memorabilia?
Gus:I began in 1977 just after the first movie came out. I loved the film so much that I started buying anything I could find: comics, trading cards, buttons. There wasn't much available that first year. I collected as a kid but didn't get serious about collecting until the early 1990's when the new Star Wars books and comics started coming out. At that time I got back into collecting the action figures and then my interests expanded from there.
Paulo:How do you manage the space at your home to guard so many things of your enormous collection?
Gus:
Many of the rooms in our house are set up with Star Wars collectibles. Having a place to display it allows me to better focus since it's the only space I'm ever going to have. If something doesn't fit with the themes in my collection, then I probably don't need it.
Paul0:Wich type of Starwars items do you prefer to collect?
Gus:I have interests in a few areas: toy prototypes, movie props, cast and crew items, cereal boxes and other food items, and record awards. The general theme is finding items that are extremely rare and hard to find.
Paulo:I know that you have been travelling with your wife Pam,for several places where some scenes of SW were filmed.Can you tell us something about these travels?
Gus:I've been to most of the Star Wars film locations including London, Sevilla Spain, Lake Como Italy, Death Valley USA, Finse Norway, Yuma USA, Crescent City USA, and all over Tunisia. It is a truly amazing experience to visit an actual Star Wars film location because you feel like you're in a Star Wars movie. My favorite of these is Tunisia which has so many different Star Wars sites. I've been to Tunisia 4 times and never get tired of going there.
Paulo:What is the most valuable item of your collection?
Gus:I have a lot of unique items, but I would guess the Death Star model is one of the most valuable in my collection. It's the only 3D model of the Death Star they made for the first movie and it's currently on loan to a museum in Seattle.
Paulo:-Do you have at present,any current project connected with SW collectables?
Gus:I'm working on a couple of projects that haven't been announced yet. I also continue to write articles for Star Wars Insider.
Paulo:Wich sugestion do you want to leave for the portuguese collectors of SW?
Gus:I hope many of the Star Wars collectors in Portugal decide to go to JediCon in Germany in the Spring. JediCon is becoming a big international Star Wars event with fans and collectors from all over Europe. This will be my 4th JediCon visit. If not, I hope someday to get to a Star Wars convention in Portugal!
